ACADEMIC WORK

The department provides teaching of general courses: «Medical Chemistry» and «Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry» (Biologically important classes of bioorganic compounds) to the 1st year students studying course of “Health Care”, specialty “Medicine”, “Pediatrics” and “Dentistry” according to credit-transfer system. Laboratory practical work is organized. Bachelors students on specialty “Technology of medical diagnosis and treatment” study course of “Medical Chemistry” (1, 2, 3 courses). Students are pursuing a bachelor's degree in “Technology of medical diagnosis and treatment” (2 course and 2 course after junior specialist) study the subject “Analytical Chemistry”. Students are pursuing a bachelor's degree in specialty “Nursing” (full-time and part-time) study discipline “Medical Chemistry”. All educational and methodical literature is prepared in Ukrainian, English and Russian languages. Literature is constantly updated. There is a methodological room with a mini-library on the department (where you can find literature in Ukrainian, English and Russian languages) and a study room for students` self-work (SSW) - the room has the ability to work using Wi-Fi. Additionally methodology instructions for self-work for all subjects in «Medical Chemistry» and «Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry» you can find in the repository of KNMU. The SSW is 100% guaranteed.

EDUCATIONAL WORK

The department devotes special attention to educational work with domestic and foreign students; especially English-speaking (the department is a curator of the Indian Community). Department of medical and bioorganic chemistry created the museum, which exhibitions are constantly updated:

1) “State symbols of Ukraine. Spiritual Treasures of Ukrainian people”

2) “The Day of National Embroidered Shirt”

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH WORK

A good tradition of carrying out interfaculty Conference “Chemistry. Ecology. Medicine” for 1st year students has been developed in the Department since 2010. The X anniversary conference “Chemistry. Ecology. Medicine” will be carried out for students in 2020. Winners of this conference are recommended to participate in the annual conference of students and young scientists “Medicine of the Third Millennium” and other inter-university, inter-regional and national activities of students and young scientists. Since 2013 staff of the department conducted Interfaculty Student Conference of Bioorganic Chemistry, since 2014 – conference for bachelors and this has become a tradition. The student scientific club “Caffeine” is working in the department. There are two students’ scientific laboratories at the department. Department staff prepares students for participation in chemistry olympiads. Significant attention is given to the interdisciplinary connections of chemistry with other disciplines. Every 2 years department staff takes part in the organization of inter-regional scientific-technical conference “Formation of the modern concept of teaching natural sciences in medical educational institutions”. In 2020 department will perform registered scientific-practical conference “Formation of the modern concept of teaching natural sciences in medical educational institutions”.

AREAS OF RESEARCH

From 2010 to 2012 staff of the the department worked at the research “Chemical and pharmaceutical rationale for pharmacological properties of caffeine-containing compositions”: chemical and pharmaceutical study of pharmacological properties of these compositions were carried out and their practicability for application to treat an inflammatory and painful processes was proved that could become the basis for creating new domestic combined drugs with analgesic and anti-inflammatory action. The research area of the department in 2013 – 2015 is “Chemical-pharmaceutical and experimental study of pharmacological properties of compositions containing nitrogen-containing organic compounds”.

In December, 2018, a new research “Chemical-pharmaceutical and experimental study of pharmacological properties oxicams and their compositions with caffeine” will be finished (2016-2018).

In 2019 new innovative research was planned for the topic “Chemical-pharmaceutical rationale for the creating biologically-active compounds, conjugates and medicinal compositions with anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity”

Another scientific direction of the department is a performance of quantum-chemical, experimental, biochemical research. Scientific studies are conducted by cooperation agreements with Ukrainian universities:

1) Communal Healthcare Establishment "Regional Clinical Hospital - Emergency Care Center and Disaster Medicine";

2) SE “Sytenko Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology, AMS of Ukraine”;

3) Institute of Organic Chemistry NAS of Ukraine;

4) KNURE;

5) NTU “Kharkov Polytechnic University”;

6) V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

There are three stages in the department history. Teaching of Chemistry on Faculty of Medicine began in the pre-revolutionary period by chemists of natural division of Physics and Mathematics faculty. 1855-1917 – First period: N.N. Beketov, who glorified Kharkov University for their scientific achievements in the field of physical chemistry. The following scientists taught chemistry: Osipov I.P, Timofeev V.F., Valyashko M.A. Second period in the department’ history began after the October Revolution. A separate Department of Chemistry has been allocated at the medical faculty, it was headed by prof. Timofeev G.E. (1917-1926 years), prof. Goleva F.P. (1926-1929 years), Gapon E.N. (1929-1930 years), Gabel Y.U. (1931-1949r.r.), ass T.V. (1931-1955 years).

The modern period (the third) of the department’s history has begun since 1955. Heads of department in those years were: as. professor Glebov F.M. (1955-1962), prof. Andreasov L.M. (1962-1969), as. professor Kozarezenko P.M. (1969-1978), as. professor Huhryanskyy V.G. (1978-1989), as. professor Shapoval L.G. (1989-2004), prof. Zavgorodniy I.V. (2004-2009). Since 2009 the department is headed by doctor of pharmacy, professor Syrova G.O. On the initiative of Ganna Olegivna students’ conferences "Chemistry. Ecology. Medicine” for domestic and english-speaking students have been developed in the Department since 2010. The X anniversary conference “Chemistry. Ecology. Medicine” will be carried out in 2020. In 2010, a museum to 205th anniversary of KhNMU and 55th anniversary of the current stage of the Medical and Bioorganic Chemistry Department was created.
