Academic WORK The Department provides training for students of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of the faculty of dentistry and of the 4th, 5th and 6th years of faculties of medicine. There is a constantly updating library at the department which includes educational, scientific and methodical literature. An important role for education and attitude development is played by methodical recommendations developed at the department according to the future student specialization. In addition the monographs are also involved to improve the educational process. Multimedia educational materials are widely used during lectures and practical classes. The students undergo computer training tests in the computer lab for preparation to the module control test and for the licensing examination test "KROK-2". The elements of the distance learning are also introduced in the educational work. Prevalent The students spend the major part of the practical classes at the patients’ bedside, in the dressing or operating room. RESEARCH WORK Main investigations are focused on a comprehensive study of diseases of the pancreatoduodenal region, gastric and duodenal ulcers, surgical infection, purulent wounds and postoperative complications. Research on the following topics: improving of homeostasis correction methods in patients with acute pancreatitis; modern approaches to diagnosis and treatment of the acute postoperative pancreatitis; early enteral tube feeding in treatment of acute surgical diseases of the abdominal cavity; reconstructive surgery of the extrahepatic biliary tract; improving of the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers; problem of preventing the nosocomial infection; treatment of purulent wounds and postoperative complications with the appliance of the latest scientific achievements (low-intensity laser irradiation, EHF electromagnetic waves, cryotherapy, etc.) are performed. SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION The Department cooperates with Institute of Therapy of the NAMSU, Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of Ukraine and Institute of General and Emergency Surgery, supports continued international scientific contacts with the Institute of Surgery named after A.Vishnevsky (Moscow), Research Institute of Emergency Care named after I.Dzhanelidze (St. Petersburg), Urgenchsk affiliate of the National Medical University of Uzbekistan. CLINICAL WORK Clinical work and practical training of students take place at Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital آNo.31”. The main diagnostic and therapeutic methods include ultrasonography; endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract; low-intensity laser irradiation of purulent wounds and trophic ulcers; dosage cryotherapy of purulent wounds and trophic ulcers; low-frequency therapeutic magnetotherapy; EHF electromagnetic waves; assessment of the excretory function of the pancreas; assessment of the human immune reactivity; enteral tube feeding in the early postoperative period in cases of the acute abdominal surgical pathology; laparoscopic abdominal surgical interventions; organ preserving surgery of gastric and duodenal ulcers, etc.
Department of Surgical Diseases was organized by the order No. 762 dated 27.06.1983 of Minister of Health of USSR. On 04.07.2008 the department was renamed to Department of Surgery No. 3 according to the order № 201 of KhNMU.
