EDUCATIONAL WORK The Department provides the military training of students according to the training program of medical service reserve officers. "Home care in extreme situations", "Fundamentals of medical care for the population and troops", "General military training", "General tactics", "Organization of medical care for troops", "Medical care for the wounded at the pre-hospital stage", "Military toxicology, radiology and medical protection", "Organization of providing troops with medical equipment", "Technology of drugs in the field" are taught. Students of medical faculties of KhNMU, medical faculty of KhNU named after V.N. Karazin, pharmaceutical faculties of NUPh study according to the annual recruitment plan approved by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine at the expense of individuals and legal entities. The training is held on the basis of the Department of Disaster Medicine and Military Medicine of KhNMU using the training facilities of the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Northern Region, the Military Institute of Tank Troops of NTU (KhPI), Kharkiv National University of the Air Force named after I. Kozhedub and the garrison sanitary-epidemiological detachment. In addition, the Department also teaches general and normative disciplines: "Health and safety, basics of bioethics and biosafety", "Civil protection". Students of all faculties of KhNMU are studying. Teaching is conducted in Ukrainian, Russian and English. DIRECTIONS OF THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH The main topic of the research plan of the Department is "Research of individual-typological features of human adaptation to the intellectual and physical load", and the initiative topic is "Research of dynamics of military-professional adaptation of cadets to conditions of training in military higher education establishments". Working on the orders of the Chief of the Main Military Medical Department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the staff of the Department took part in the development of projects "Regulations on military training of students at the Departments of Disaster Medicine and Military Medicine of medical universities under the program of training reserve officers and their postgraduate training", "Training programs for medical service reserve officers from among students of medical higher education establishments", "Schedules for the staff of the Departments of Disaster Medicine and Military Medicine of medical higher education establishments". RESEARCH COOPERATION The department cooperates with the Main Military Medical Department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy, the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Northern Region, regional departments of the Disaster Medicine Service, clinical, sanitary and epidemiological institutions of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in order to create a single regional system of medical care for the population and servicemen in peacetime and during emergencies. EDUCATIONAL AND METHODICAL WORK More than 80 educational and methodical works have been published - manuals, recommendations, instructions, among which "Creative activity of the teacher, ways of formation of pedagogical skill", "Medical company of the mechanized brigade", "Special processing", "Dosimetric control", "Nuclear weapon and means of protection against it", "Transport disasters", "Accidents at nuclear power plants, their medical and tactical characteristics", "Organization of sanitary and hygienic measures in emergencies", "Educational process and principles of its organization at the departments of MD and MM, methods and types of training", "Military toxicology", "Accidents at chemically dangerous objects, their medical and tactical characteristics", "Organizational bases of medical support of the population in the system of the State service of disaster medicine", "Indication of toxic substances. Assessment of the chemical situation", "Planning of medical and sanitary provision of the population during emergencies" and etc. in Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT On May 2, 1932, in order to prepare reserves for the Armed Forces, the Department of Military Sanitary Disciplines was established by the order of the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian Military District and the People's Commissar for Education, later renamed to the Department of Military Sanitary Training. On September 1941, as part of the institute, it was evacuated to Chkalov (now Orenburg). Since 1946 the Department has been fully staffed with qualified teachers who had many years of experience in teaching and medical support of hostilities during the Second World War. Since 1948 the Department has been called the Department of Special Training, since 1954 it has been renamed the Military Department, since 1996 - the Department of Extreme and Military Medicine, and since 2003 - the Department of Disaster Medicine and Military Medicine. Thus, the development of the Department can be divided into three periods. The first period covers 9 years, from its inception in 1932 until the beginning of World War II in 1941.
